Welcome to Real WW Talk! We are Candice, Erin, and Rikki, three diverse friends who met in the Weight Watchers Studio and formed a friendship. When COVID-19 hit, our weekly in-person chat went virtual, and we decided to invite you in for even more accountability. There’s no hiding, no trying to make ourselves better than we are, just real talk about our struggles and wins as we journey towards better health on Weight Watchers, and you’re welcome to join in.
What does weight loss look like from a man's perspective? The messages men receive about their bodies, health, masculinity, and asking for help can be very different from what women experience. Understanding those differences can change how we support the men in our WW meetings, online communities, and in our own lives.
Real WW Talk Plus is our special September series exploring men's perspectives on weight loss, weight management, health, and everything that comes with it.
In this second part of a two-part episode, National WW Coach Michael G and local WW Coach Jonathan Bucklew-Marlette share what they've learned from their own weight loss journeys and from coaching other men.
They talk about:
• Why men are taught to be masculine and not ask for help
• The different messages men and women receive about weight and health
• The strange double standard around bigger men and body image
• Looking at other guys and thinking, ”That's what I'm supposed to look like”
• Why the idea that men have it easier when they lose weight isn't quite true
• How years of diet culture can shape women's experiences differently
• Supporting men in WW meetings, online, and in everyday life
And there's a big question at the heart of it all: If men aren't surrounded by the same diet culture messages women have been exposed to for years, does that actually make weight loss easier?
Weight loss isn't easier for men. It's just different.
Meet the Coaches
Michael G is a WW National Coach who joined WW 23 years ago at just over 400 pounds and went on to lose 200 pounds. He's been a Lifetime member and coach for 20 years, and his WW meetings are available through the WW app.
Jonathan Bucklew-Marlette lost more than 100 pounds after making a life-changing decision in 2018. He became a Lifetime member in 2019 and later became a WW Coach, helping members in the Omaha, Nebraska, and Council Bluffs, Iowa areas.
